Vehicle Verification Punjab: Check Vehicle Details Online
Every week, people across Punjab hand over lakhs of rupees for a used car or motorcycle based on a seller’s word and a file of papers. Most of those deals are fine. Some aren’t — the seller isn’t the real owner, the token tax hasn’t been paid in years, or the engine in the car isn’t the one on record.
A vehicle verification Punjab check settles those questions before money changes hands. It pulls the official record from the Motor Transport Management Information System (MTMIS), the database run by the Excise, Taxation & Narcotics Control Department and built by the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB). In about a minute, you see who the vehicle is registered to, what it is, and whether its paperwork is current.
What You Need Before You Start:
The check takes three pieces of information. Two come from the vehicle’s documents, so keep them close.
| You need | Where to find it | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Registration number | Number plate, smart card or registration book | LEA-1234LEC-22-5678GAB 789 |
| Registration date | Smart card or first page of the registration book | 20-03-2024 |
| Security code | Shown in the tool itself | 918583 |
How to Check Vehicle Verification in Punjab Online
The tool follows the same steps as the official MTMIS portal, with a few conveniences added. Here’s the full process.
- Enter the vehicle number. Type the plate as it appears, such as LEA 1234 or LEC-22-5678. Capital letters, spaces and dashes don’t matter.
- Enter the registration date. Type eight digits as DDMMYYYY and the tool formats them automatically, so 20032024 becomes 20-03-2024. Alternatively, tap the calendar icon and pick the date.
- Type the security code. Copy the digits from the image exactly. Can’t read them? Tap the refresh icon and a new code loads.
- Press Verify vehicle. The official record opens on a separate result page.
- Save the result if you need it. Download it as a PDF or JPG to share with a family member, a mechanic or the seller.
Every security code works for a single attempt only. So if a check fails for any reason, the tool loads a fresh code for your next try.
Why MTMIS Punjab Now Asks for the Registration Date
Until recently, anyone could type a random number plate into MTMIS and see a stranger’s name and home city. The Excise Department has since added the registration date as a required field alongside the vehicle number.
The change protects owners’ privacy. Only someone with access to the vehicle’s documents — the owner, a genuine buyer or a dealer — normally knows that date. In practice, it also filters out casual snooping on other people’s cars.
This is why many older guides no longer work. They still tell you that the number alone is enough, and users who follow them get an error. If that happened to you, the missing date is almost certainly the reason.
Where to Find the Registration Date
- Vehicle smart card: Punjab now issues a smart card instead of the old paper book for most registrations and transfers. The registration date is printed on it.
- Registration book (file): older vehicles still carry the paper registration book. The date of registration appears on its first page.
- Dealer documents: for a new vehicle, the date usually matches the registration receipt the dealer hands over.
Buying from someone you don’t know? Ask the seller for a clear photo of the smart card before you travel to see the vehicle. It gives you the date, and a seller who refuses such a basic request is showing you a red flag early.
Punjab Number Plate Formats
Punjab plates generally combine a district letter code with a serial number, and sometimes a year. You might see:
| Format | Example | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Letters + digits | LEA 1234 |
Older registrations |
| Letters + year + digits | LEC-22-5678 |
Year-coded registrations |
| Letters + three digits | GAB 789 |
Older series |
What the MTMIS Vehicle Verification Result Shows
A successful check returns the official record in four sections, headed by the registration number. The layout below matches the result sheet MTMIS itself produces, which carries the line “This provided information can be verified on www.mtmis.excise.punjab.gov.pk”.
1. Owner Details
| Field | What it tells you | What to compare it with |
|---|---|---|
| Owner Name | The person the vehicle is legally registered to | The seller's original CNIC |
| Father/Husband Name | Confirms the owner's identity | The same CNIC |
| Owner City | The owner's recorded city or town | Where the seller says they live |
2. Latest Payment Details
| Field | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Date | When the last payment to Excise was made |
| Amount | How much was paid, in rupees |
| Payment Type | What the payment was for, such as NEW REGISTRATION, a transfer or token tax |
3. Vehicle Details
| Field | What it tells you | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Engine Number | The engine registered to this vehicle | Match it with the number stamped on the engine block |
| Make Name | Manufacturer and model, e.g. HONDA - CD 70 or TOYOTA - COROLLA | Confirm it's the same model you're looking at |
| Registration Date | When it was first registered in Punjab | Tells you the vehicle's real age on the road |
| Year of Manufacture | The model year | Spot a car sold as "2022 model" that was built earlier |
| Vehicle Price | The value recorded at registration | Useful context when negotiating |
| Color | The registered colour | A different colour can mean an unreported repaint or a swapped identity |
| Token | Token tax status, such as a paid-up date or Life Time | Tells you whether tax is due |
What "Life Time" Token Means
When the Token field reads Life Time, the owner paid a one-time lifetime token tax at registration. No annual token tax is due on that vehicle. This is common on motorcycles and many smaller cars registered in Punjab.
If the field shows a date instead, that's the date up to which tax is paid. A date in the past means tax is outstanding, and that liability stays with the vehicle when you buy it.
4. Vehicle Application Tracking
| Field | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Application Type | The latest application on the vehicle, such as NEW REGISTRATION or a transfer |
| Application Current Status | Where that application stands, for example DELIVERED |
Example Result (Illustrative)
Here's how a typical motorcycle record reads, with personal details removed:
| Section | Field | Example value |
|---|---|---|
| Owner Details | Owner Name / Father Name / City | [Name] / [Name] / Gujranwala |
| Latest Payment | Date / Amount / Type | 14-Mar-2024 / Rs 5,680 / NEW REGISTRATION |
| Vehicle Details | Make / Year / Colour | HONDA - PRIDOR / 2022 / BLACK |
| Vehicle Details | Registration Date / Token | 2024-03-20 / Life Time |
| Application Tracking | Type / Status | NEW REGISTRATION / DELIVERED |
Why Online Vehicle Verification in Punjab Matters
A used vehicle carries its history with it — unpaid tax, pending applications and, occasionally, a false identity. Verification exposes most of these problems in minutes, before they become yours.
The common frauds in Punjab’s used-vehicle market follow a few patterns:
- Selling without ownership. The seller holds the vehicle but not the title, often on an old open transfer letter.
- Tampered or swapped engines. The engine number on the vehicle doesn’t match the record.
- Cloned identities. A stolen car wears the number and papers of a legitimate one. The colour or model on record gives it away.
- Hidden dues. Years of unpaid token tax quietly transfer to the buyer.
- Stalled paperwork. A transfer that was started but never completed leaves the vehicle stuck in someone else’s name.
For dealers and showrooms, a check also protects reputation. For banks and leasing companies, it’s a quick first screen before a formal inspection.
Number Plates Now Stay With the Owner (Since 1 September 2025)
Punjab changed how registration numbers work on 1 September 2025. A vehicle’s number is now linked to the owner’s CNIC rather than to the vehicle itself. Dawn reported the change in August 2025, citing the Excise & Taxation Department.
Here’s what that means in practice:
- When you sell, you can keep your number and later move it to your next vehicle.
- When you buy, you’ll usually receive a new registration number from the Motor Registering Authority after the transfer.
- Unused numbers can be reserved for up to two years, according to the department.
- Delays cost money. Applying late for a transfer brings additional charges.
So the plate you verify before buying may not be the plate the vehicle carries after the transfer. That’s normal under the new system. Always run the check on the current number before the deal, and keep a PDF of the result for your records.
Sold a vehicle that the buyer never transferred? The department advises calling its helpline, 1035, to have the registration suspended so you aren’t held responsible for the vehicle’s future use.
How Vehicle Transfer Works in Punjab: Biometric via App
Once the check comes back clean, the transfer is the step that actually protects you. Punjab now lets both parties complete biometric verification from their phones, using two apps: e-Pay Punjab for the fee and NADRA Pak ID for biometrics.
- The buyer pays the fee. In the e-Pay Punjab app, choose Excise & Taxation, then Transfer of Ownership. Enter the vehicle number and the buyer’s CNIC to generate a PSID, then pay through a banking app, JazzCash, EasyPaisa or an ATM.
- The seller verifies first. In Pak ID, the seller selects the vehicle, taps Transfer Now, completes face and fingerprint verification, enters the buyer’s CNIC and receives a Tracking ID and PIN.
- The buyer verifies next. Using the seller’s Tracking ID and PIN in Pak ID, the buyer reviews the vehicle details and completes their own face and fingerprint scan.
- Submit the documents. Download the biometric slip from Pak ID, then submit it with the original smart card or registration book and CNIC copies at the Excise office.
The biometric step can’t start until the transfer fee is paid, so do step 1 first. PakWheels’ walkthrough shows each screen. Prefer to do it in person? Both parties can still complete biometrics together at an Excise office.
Whatever route you choose, avoid the open transfer letter. It leaves the seller legally tied to the vehicle and leaves you without proper title.
Other Ways to Check Vehicle Registration in Punjab
The online tool is the quickest and most detailed option, but it isn’t the only one. Each method suits a different situation.
| Method | What you need | Detail level | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Online tool (this page) | Number + registration date | Full record | Free | Pre-purchase checks, saving a PDF |
| Official MTMIS portal | Number + registration date | Full record | Free | Cross-checking at the source |
| SMS 8785 | Number only | Basic | Standard SMS rate | Quick check without documents |
| Excise office visit | Documents + CNIC | Complete, certified | Varies | Disputes, legal and court matters |
| Helpline 1035 | Number and your query | Guidance | Normal call rate | Questions, suspending a sold vehicle |
Vehicle Verification Through SMS 8785
Type the registration number without spaces, for example LEA1234, and send it to 8785 from any Pakistani mobile network. You’ll get a short reply with basic ownership and tax information.
The SMS service still works with the number alone, which makes it handy when you don’t have the registration date yet. Keep in mind that the reply carries far less detail than the online record.
The Official MTMIS Punjab Portal
You can always search directly on the official MTMIS Punjab portal. It asks for the same three fields and returns the same record. However, it can slow down at peak hours, and it blocks some connections from outside Pakistan. Our tool retries automatically and works for overseas Pakistanis checking a vehicle back home.
Visiting an Excise & Taxation Office
For a full ownership history, a certified record or a dispute, visit the Motor Registration Authority in your district with the vehicle documents and your CNIC. The department’s head office is Transport House, 11-Egerton Road, Lahore, and there are regional offices across Punjab, including Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Multan, Gujranwala, Sargodha, Bahawalpur, Sahiwal and D.G. Khan.
Token Tax Check and Payment in Punjab
Token tax is the annual motor vehicle tax Punjab charges on every registered vehicle. The verification result shows its status in the Token field. If it reads Life Time, nothing more is due; if it shows a past date, dues are pending.
To pay outstanding token tax:
- Open e-Pay Punjab on the web or as an app.
- Choose Excise & Taxation, then Token Tax, and enter the vehicle number.
- Generate a PSID, which shows the exact amount including any penalty.
- Pay through your banking app, JazzCash, EasyPaisa or an ATM.
Rates depend on engine capacity, vehicle value and category, and the government revises them through the budget. For the current figures, use the department’s motor vehicle tax page rather than any third-party table.
Vehicle Smart Card in Punjab
Punjab’s vehicle smart card is a wallet-sized card that replaces the old paper registration book for most new registrations and transfers. It carries the registration number, registration date, owner details, and the engine and chassis numbers.
After a registration or transfer, the card is posted to the owner. Two things are worth checking:
- Application status: the Application Tracking section of your verification result shows DELIVERED once the process is complete.
- Delivery: the card is typically sent through Pakistan Post, so you can follow it using the tracking number on your receipt at Pakistan Post tracking.
Checking a Vehicle Registered Outside Punjab
MTMIS Punjab covers only Punjab-registered vehicles. A car with an Islamabad, Sindh or Khyber Pakhtunkhwa registration sits in a different provincial system:
Before you buy, also check for unpaid traffic fines. Our PSCA e-challan check shows whether Safe City cameras have issued challans against the plate, and those fines can follow the vehicle.
Is This Vehicle Verification Tool Official?
No. MTMIS.com.pk is an independent website. It is not run by, or affiliated with, the Excise, Taxation & Narcotics Control Department Punjab or PITB.
Our tool sends your search to the official MTMIS record and shows the department’s reply in a clearer layout. We don’t keep your searches: each result is deleted from our server within minutes of being shown.
For court cases, insurance claims or any legal purpose, rely only on records the department certifies. See our disclaimer for full terms, and our main MTMIS Punjab guide for office locations and other services
Final Word on Vehicle Verification Punjab
A vehicle verification Punjab check costs nothing and takes a minute, yet it answers the questions that matter most in any used-vehicle deal. Who owns it? Is the tax paid? Is this really the vehicle on the papers?
So run the check, compare the result with the vehicle and the seller’s CNIC, and finish with a biometric transfer. If everything lines up, buy with confidence. If it doesn’t, walk away — there’s always another car.
